Joy & Justice in Math K-5

Thank you for your interest in the Building Joy and Justice in Mathematics through Inclusive Practice Institute, which will run in Summer 2024. This course is a 24 hour time commitment. Participants will earn a $1200 stipend and 24 PDUs for their participation.

Our why: Many students, especially Black, Indigenous, and Latinx students, are not afforded spaces where they have voice, choice and agency over their own math learning. The Building Joy and Justice in Mathematics institute will provide educators with an opportunity to examine inclusive, culturally-responsive practices in math teaching. With the support of facilitators and colleagues, educators will sharpen the skills and knowledge to modify existing curriculum or create mathematics lessons centering humanization, play, critical thinking lenses and students’ lived experience.

What: This course will cover research and theories from Gholdy Muhammad, Francis Su and Rochelle Gutiérrez. We will begin with a two-day kickoff event on Zoom, followed by asynchronous learning on Canvas. Participants will create a final project that brings together all they have learned with the content they plan to teach in the fall. We will conclude the course by sharing our final projects and celebrating the completion of this journey together.

When:
    Zoom kickoff event: June 24-25, 9-12pm (K-5) or 12-3pm (6-8)
Asynchronous learning on Canvas: 15 hours between June 26-August 2
    Final project sharing and celebration: August 5, 9-12pm (K-5) or 12-3pm (6-8)

Other important details:
We encourage school teams to apply! The application deadline is June 3. If we receive more applications than spots, we will prioritize teachers from Title 1/schools with high percentages of Global Majority students, and school teams. Teachers will be notified about their status by June 10.
